ABC Self-Regulation Technique

Something that’s short enough to practice throughout the day is a brief check-in and self-regulation technique, summarized by the acronym ABC (from Mark Walsh).

  • Awareness – Take a moment to check in with yourself and notice how you are.
  • Balance – Find physical balance, front to back and side to side.
  • Core – Soften your eyes, your tongue, your belly, and your pelvic floor. Feel your feet on the ground.
  • Connection (bonus!) – Think of someone that makes you smile.

Notice how you feel.

For the next week, practice ABC several times a day when you’re already doing relatively well. Upon waking, before meals, and before bed can work well. Practice not necessarily to change your state, but to make centering a more familiar and available response over time.

What quality would you like to have more access to in your daily life, and how might you practice it, little and often?

Wishing you fruitful practice.
