Saluto-what!?
Salutogenesis is the study of what contributes to well-being. Salus is the Latin word for health, prosperity, or safety. Genesis is the Greek word for beginning, origin, or creation. So salutogensis looks at the origins of health.
Western medicine tends to look at health via pathogensis, or the origins of disease. (Pathos is Greek for suffering or disease.) Yoga therapy offers a salutogenic approach to wellness. This approach focuses on contributors to health and well-being vs those that lead to disease.
Cultivating ease-supported strength is part of a salutogenic approach to wellness, especially as we age and our ability to maintain muscle mass is reduced. A yoga therapist aims to promote health vs treat a disease. We celebrate what is going well for our clients, and build on those things to help them find a balanced state. This is where wellness begins.
